Charlie Baldwin Introduction

Hey! My name is Charlie, I’m a junior IMGD tech art major from Palo Alto, California! Art was something I was always interested in growing up. I started out just doodling with colored pencils on printer paper, and slowly worked on improving my skills, until I stumbled onto 3D modeling with Maya when I reached high school. I immediately fell in love with it, and I initially was set on going into the animation industry, since I learned modeling through being on my school’s animation team. Ultimately I realized that games was a better field for me to strive for, as I do play a lot of games and I ended up preferring that style of modeling over the style for film.

This shift eventually brought me to WPI, which I chose specifically for the IMGD major. Being here has allowed be to develop my skills even further under actual professional guidance from faculty, as well as explore new software I’d never had the opportunity to use before. Since taking 3D Modeling 1 here I’ve found a new creative home with ZBrush, and have greatly enjoyed exploring all the things I can do with it. I also spent some time learning Substance Painter & Designer, which are fantastic for easily making beautiful textures for my models. Ultimately I want to enter the games industry doing either character or prop art.

In terms of improving my artistic capabilities, the main thing I’ve been wanting to get better at lately is baking normal maps, which is pretty lucky for me since in this class we’re going to be doing the high poly/low poly workflow pretty soon. I understand the concepts pretty well, I just have not had success baking good normal maps with anything besides ZBrush.

I’m inspired mostly by other artists on the internet, so I don’t know if my artistic style takes after any specific games, but I really love the art styles of League, Valorant, Overwatch, and WoW.

Below are some pieces from my portfolio. If you want to see the rest, check out my ArtStation or my Instagram!

3D sculpt of my right hand. I was born with only two fingers on my hand and wanted to capture that part of me with a 3D model.

Impressive! I gave you this badge because I think all your work is really impressive. I am not very skilled at 3D art, so that makes your work seem even more impressive to me!

Your Katara model is *gorgeous*! The strong pose, flowing hair and water, smooth textures, and circular base make it seem like an awesome figurine / miniature.

I give you the impressive badge.
I cannot do nearly anything with 3D software and looking at your art I was extremely impressed.
Especially the sword and even the clothing on your human character. You seem to take lots of care with the details and textures. I could see this stuff in games.

    IMPRESSIVE!

I don’t have anything specific to point out really. Everything just looks professional and super polished. Knowing you’re still a college student, I am surprised and a little intimidated.

I agree with everyone else in giving you the impressive badge, as your work is just that. Your 3D models are so clean and beautiful and your posing of Katara is simply wonderful. I’m jealous of how professional your 3D models look, they inspire me to work harder on my own!

    Hi Charlie,

I’m giving you the gorgeous badge. Your Katara model is still really cool and fits her flow as a water bender! I also really like your character models too. You definately put a lot of time into them and added some personality too.
