Lisa Liao Final Project

Snail Tale allows players to become a snail-riding mouse exploring a foggy mushroom forest. The slow movement speed and soothing ambient music create a relaxing environment. An important part of the scene is composition. The foliage consists of only a few mushrooms, stems, and leaves, but they are varied and placed in a way that…

Lisa Liao Character Animation

My character doesn’t have the ability to leave the snail’s back, so most of the animations are secondary undulations. Idle animation with up and down head bobbing “Walk” animation with more forward and backward bobbing “Run” animation with start, loop, and end

Lisa Liao Character Texturing

The snail rider has warm tones like their environment. I debated giving the mouse or shell a more lively color to avoid monotony but ultimately decided against it since the scene lacks materials to complement that. I tend toward natural colors because I think they’re soothing.

Lisa Liao Character Modeling

Here is my Snail Rider concept sketch again: This is the high-poly model: I retopologized everything from scratch by hand and it probably wasn’t necessary, in hindsight. Here is the low-poly model: The model looks smoother after softening most edges Rare view of the other side and the snail’s asymmetrical shell:

Lisa Liao Midterm

My level still looks pretty barren but here is the kit with pieces that I’ve managed to repurpose into a few structures in my level. The images below are third person views but I’d like my level to be played in the first person.

Lisa Liao Modular Building Kit Texturing

Some core building kit pieces. Still missing a large hollow tree trunk, flowers, more foliage such as grass and moss, and more variety of mushrooms My question What is the feeling you get when you see these mushrooms? How would you describe their texture and how do they feel to the touch?

Lisa Liao Level Design

The player starts out either in a cave or inside a store (bottom left) – somewhere indoors. I’d like to give the cave a try since I’ve never made one before. The ending treehouse (upper right) should have some indoor space. They’ll probably reach the large rock on the right hand side first, where they…

Lisa Liao Game Concept

Snail Tale (working title) is an adventure puzzle game for teens and young adults who continue to linger in fantasy worlds beyond childhood. I think many of us can relate as artists. We navigate through a desnse forest while collecting useful items and information to unlock more playable areas. The backstory is that the player…

Lisa Liao Intro and Work

Hey reader, I’m named after Lisa Simpson (my younger sister is named Maggie!) so you can remember my name that way. My family is from Taiwan and most still live there. My parents came to the US after undergrad and loved it (and The Simpsons) enough to have kids here. A large portion of my…
