Lisa Liao Final Project

Snail Tale allows players to become a snail-riding mouse exploring a foggy mushroom forest. The slow movement speed and soothing ambient music create a relaxing environment. An important part of the scene is composition. The foliage consists of only a few mushrooms, stems, and leaves, but they are varied and placed in a way that adds depth.

I’m happy with the overall atmosphere of my level and my character’s appearance. I accomplished an earthy and natural scene, but didn’t incorporate some of the whimsical fairy tale items I intended to. I think bolder colors and exaggeration would help. My snail rider turned out very different from the concept but is still silly and cute.

You can see how slow the character moves and see the fairytale particles in motion.

All of my modular assets

My most notable growth in terms of skill is learning to use Substance Painter. This course pushed me to finally try it after hearing so much about it. Another part is learning more about how materials, meshes, and rigs interact with one another (mostly how they break). I haven’t fully grasped the do’s and don’ts of working iteratively because something always breaks whenever I step backwards in the workflow. My character animation is the most notable victim of this, but I hope to fix him soon.

Thank you all for an awesome class!

The lighting and the colors are so perfect, it’s relaxing just to look at. I would love to spend more time just wandering an area like this, even if there isn’t any action. I can’t think of a more calming atmosphere I’ve seen in a game.

I can’t express enough how relaxing this game is. From the second that we load in, I feel like the colors, the lighting, and the models all come together to make players feel nice and relaxed and ready for a fun experience. Also, your mouse riding a snail is adorable, and the concept of that will never not be adorable!

Honestly, the peaceful, calming tone of the music and the environment just gets me in the mood to explore your level. It’s something you can do for hours and feel relaxed for playing a game. Also, great work on the mouse on a snail, hopefully he gets to explore more of the forest in the future!
