Natalie Milgram Final Project

Revised Concept

My game level is loosely inspired from a world inspired from symptoms of bipolar spectrum disorders. I have been developing this world (titled Polarenti) for MQP, but the specific area of this level’s inspiration is called Magora. In the end, my game level concept is mainly a surreal environment filled with sentient objects including buildings, soda cans, streetlamps, and a garden hose. I took inspiration from abstract artwork and surrealism. The objects make strange noises and I added some lens distortion to give my level an unusual and somewhat wonky vibe. I attempted to create a disorienting environment with building tentacles jutting out at different angles and an intense saturated color palette complete with basic particle effects and a skybox with a painting of Magora.

Reflection

I learned a ton during this course. From 3D modeling techniques to texturing methods, rigging, animation, basic particle effects and Unity scripts, I gained lots of experience. I think I grew the most in my understanding of the 3D art pipeline. That is, going from Maya/Zbrush to Alchemist/Substance Painter and then Unity (with other softwares in between). This was my first time rigging or animating a character, but I feel this was the most satisfying. To model a character, texture them, rig/animate them, and then add some simple code to interact with my character in Unity. It was/is pretty exciting to see my garden hose, Sandy, alive. Surprisingly, I think I enjoyed the audio effects almost more than the visual art components of my world. It really added to the Magoran atmosphere. Though I also loved taking photographs outside to use in custom materials for Magoran objects. While I’m not specializing in 3D art, I learned a little about a lot which I’m sure will be extremely useful moving forward in life.

I love how your project came out it looks awesome! I love the sky box you made and you characters are so cute, the soda can is so adorable.

  2. Christian says:

I quite enjoy how it almost looks like a 3D painting. Kind of like how some people create 3D walk-throughs of famous paintings like Van Gogh’s Starry Night and so on. It really makes it pop out and feel like a true artistic environment.

I love how unique this world is. Using your paintings as the skybox was also a very good touch/move for the level.

I love your use of texture and grit in this project. I feel like I can feel the texture of the things in your environment by looking at them, and its a space that I want to explore more of. I am extremely impressed by how you made this both very abstractly beautiful, and yet believable within itself. Great job!

Your envinroment really leaves players with a sense of awe even after exiting. I feel like a different being walking through the world instead of myself! The audio effects and interactions add a lot of immersion – really great touch. Also I realized your skybox kind of looks like a whirlpool suctioning everything into it! I feel like that fits the theme.

I think after staring at that skybox is going to keep me up all night. All jokes aside, this was very well made! Your concept looked really challenging to flush out, but you managed to fit your own personal style and set your concept correctly. Originally I remember you commenting on my post about 3D work and was worried about it, but you definitely showed a lot of improvement.
