Natalie Milgram Character Texturing

Here is my textured sentient garden hose Crink – Sandy. I was able to bring back a little more attitude once I changed their proportions and added texturing.

In Substance Painter I added several materials and colors.
Here is Sandy back in Maya, I was able to paint additional surface details in Substance Painter.

I think your character turned out really well! I love the textures you chose, as well as the colors. I think it all makes your character really feel like a gardening tool!

I agree the texturing adds lots of character! Sandy looks like she’s been through a lot by the looks of her dented plates, but is tough and still going strong. I think exaggerated hose and aentenna animations could really bring out her sassiness . For example: chest out (like slightly curved body) with high and forward pointing aentennas. Maybe her hose could even look like it’s ‘resting on her hips’ sometimes.

The rugged-ness of the textures gives Sandy that edge. I think it would be cool if Sandy’s eye color changed depending on their mood.

How that’s a cool idea Dylan! I wonder if I can figure out how to animate color changes. I also love your animation suggestions Lisa! Thank you!

Why is this a character? I don’t understand how you gave a garden hose a personality but here we are. Maybe it’s the bright colors, or the distinct texturework, or the way the blue circle in the middle kind of resembles an eye. In any case, it’s great how it all comes together to give this incredibly mundane object some life!
