Courtney Flokos Game Design Proposal & Concept Sketch

Game Design Proposal:

The main character of the game is a pixie. A pixie is very similar to a fairy in both size and nature, but they do not have wings. The player will be playing in first person, so they will not actually be able to see the pixie. The objective of the game is to make your way through the Toadstool Forest. The pixie you are playing has never been out of the Toadstool Forest, so she wants to see what the world is like outside. The game mechanics are very basic because the player is walking through a mushroom forest that is much like a maze. The player mechanics are to have you be able to walk and look around, but nothing much more than that is needed. The main objective of the game is to make your way through the Toadstool Forest. This can seem like any easy task, but I will try to make the forest a bit of a maze so the player has to concentrate on how to get out. I would like there to be some animal characters in the game. I am not sure on what types of animals they will be because many types of animals could live in the forest, but maybe a mouse would be fitting. Since the character is so small, the animal characters will look much larger in comparison. The game takes place in a magical fantasy world, so I will be using some really pretty and vibrant colors in the Toadstool Forest to make it seem more epic. The main features of the game will be the magnificent toadstool you see in the forest. There will be different sized, shaped, and colored ones that you will see throughout the game. The pretty colors and fantasy feel of the game is supposed to hook the player and make them want to keep exploring the forest. There are three main highlights of gameplay. The player starts off in a little pixie town, there will be a few cute small pixie houses there. The player then journeys through the Toadstool Forest; this part of the game will be the substantial portion of the game. The final part is when the player finally reaches the end of the forest to see the outside world. This game can be played by anyone; there are no inappropriate elements in it that children would not want to play, and the mechanics are simple so anyone can play. If I had to say an audience I think it could appeal to the most, it would be kids. Children love fantasy and bright colors, which my game will have. I think they would have a lot of fun walking through a game where they see magical things and being tiny is fun too. The game style will be cartoony and whimsical. I will achieve whimsical aspect of this by making the colors I use more vibrant and fun than they might have been in the real world. The art style I will use will play into the theme of the game. I will use colors that highlight the fantasy and fun in the game. The game will be set during the day in spring time; this will allow me to use really vibrant and fun colors, since spring is the most colorful season. The art will not be very realistic and instead will be more stylized and cartoony. I do not want there to be many shadows or dark elements to the art because I want it to stay really fun and light hearted.

Reference Images/Mood Board:

Above is a picture of toadstools. This will be useful for making visual details in my games environment.

Above is another picture of toadstools. I want to use a lot of different types of mushrooms in my forest so it is important to look at different types.

Above is a picture of a real toadstool. Even though I will be making my art very cartoony, I think it can be helpful to see how things look in real life. I also like this image because it helps me see what they look like from a different view, underneath.

Above is a picture of a fairy house. At the beginning of my game I will have a small pixie village, so it is important to look at some images that I could draw inspiration from for that visual element.

Above is a picture of another fairy house. I like looking at different references of houses so I can decide what elements I like from different ones.

Above is a picture of toadstools very close to each other. I think this picture is important because I have to decide on the spacing for the toadstools. If there is a section of the map I do not want the player to go into, I can use really tightly packed toadstools to guide the character.

Above is a picture of a group of toadstools. This helps me think about how the toadstools can be different shapes, even when they are the same type of toadstool. It also helps me think about the different heights of toadstools I can use in my level.

Above is a picture of Candyland. This picture helps show the types of bright colors and style I want to use in my level. The style and colors are so fun and you can tell it is a fantasy world.

Above is a 3D picture of Candyland. This is another picture that helps show the style I am going for. The colors are so pretty and vibrant, and the shapes are very rounded. All of those things help it look more inviting and magical.

Above is a picture of different types of flowers. I would like to have some flowers in the Toadstool Forest to make it look more like spring and make it even more pretty. By adding the flowers it also will break up some of what the player is seeing, meaning they do not have to look at toadstools the whole game.

I am pleased that your concept seems very light hearted and fun. I especially am enjoying all of your mushroom reference and your choice of spring time which should make for a relaxing world. Do you have any specific props in mind for the characters or world besides toadstools and fairy houses?

    1. Courtney says:

That’s a great question! I will definitely have some different types of flowers, which will make the game more colorful and pretty. I also am hoping to add some other nature elements, tree stumps, and maybe some rocks, but I’ll have to see how much of those I get to!

Wow we have such similar settings! I love that you are thinking in depth about toadstool (I didn’t know this term, thank you!) species and how you will use them in your environment to guide the player. Something I’m contemplating for my level as well is how I will guide the player to the goal. Will your level design intuitively lead to one destination using props like the dense cluster of toadstool you showed? Do you plan on having dialog or other cues too? I’m excited to see how our environments turn out!!

    1. Courtney says:

That’s a great question! My plan is to use toadstool and other nature elements such as hedges to guide the player. I also will have a maze element to the game so the player may take some wrong turns along the way.

I enjoy the cottage core aesthetic present in this pitch. Will there also be giant bugs in this world?

    1. Courtney says:

That’s a good suggestion! I would love to add some animals and bugs to the game. I will have to see how my project goes.

Your concept is so cute and I really love how lighthearted your art tends to be. Do you think you will focus more on creating the exterior or interior details of the map?

    1. Courtney says:

That’s a good question! So my plan is for the map to be all outside, so I am going to focus on the exterior.

I love that you are putting thought into having varying types of mushrooms and flowers. I think that that will make your game seem eclectic in its development, which will make it look really nice. Have you thought about what other characters you might encounter in this forest. Maybe it would be cool if some of the mushrooms were alive.

    1. Courtney says:

I really like that mushroom idea I will have to try to see if I can make that! I have not decided the types of characters, I was thinking a mouse would be good!

  6. Terry says:

This concept reminds a lot (for some reason) on Alice in Wonderland. I like the whole idea of exploring a toadstool forest and navigating through it. It gives a lot of chances to look closely at what you are planning to model (flora and fauna alike).
Are you going to incorporate any kind of puzzles for the maze? Maybe a simplistic one that will keep players engaged?

    1. Courtney says:

I had not thought of the puzzle idea but it’s a really good idea! I will try to see what I can do with that.

  7. Charlie says:

Your concept is so charming! It seems like it would be a lot of fun & relaxing to explore this world. How many different types of animals are you thinking of including?

    1. Courtney says:

I am still deciding on the animals, I think I would like a mouse because it will be fun having a mouse huge compared to the player character since the character is a tiny pixie!
