Character Modeling — Meet FyED-OR!

Say Privyet to the friendly magnetic service Russian robot, FyED-OR! FyED-OR (transliterated and stylized from the Russian Фёдор) is the Soviet Union’s High Powered Magnetic Service Android (ММCA-14). Originally built in the futuristic year of 1998, the FyED-OR units were built en masse to facilitate robotic personally to help work in various factories and in zero-gravity environments. Equipped with two magnetic “hands” and magnetic fielding feet, FyED-OR units are able to lift incredibly heavy metallic objects, as well as work in any environment (assuming it’s made of some sort of metal).

So how was the character developed?

I had originally developed a bunch of random concept art that happened to have some sort of robot. The following piece of concept art was actually made way back in A-Term before we had any idea of what we were going to do for this project.

Eventually, this idea of a humanoid robot with magnets for hands begun being more and more realistic for our project. I created more concept art for the character until I had a rough idea for what FyED-OR would look like.

I didn’t know if FyED-OR would be a humanoid, a Wall-E like robot, or even a Roomba Robot!

Despite all the work I had done creating the idea of what and how the robot looked, our game was always going to be in first person, and therefore never needed a player model. However, seeing that my project for this class requires a full body player model, I decided to go the extra route and create the whole body too! This opens up new opportunities to perhaps include a third person camera in our MQP, or perhaps decorate the environment with derelict and abandoned FyED-OR units.

As for the actual modelling, it was quite tedious, but I love hard surface modelling, so it just took a lot of time.

What do you all think about this robot? Do you think it makes sense given the environment? Does it seem too “chunky“?

I think your characters modeling is really detailed and amazing. It must have taken a huge amount of patience and time to get all those tiny details done. I think the most impressive details you have are all the wires!

I am impressed with the amount of detail in your character model. It reminds me of a scuba diver. I also like the attention to detail with the valves as eyes. Is your character evil or nice? The expression seems neutral so I wasn’t sure.

I’m also impressed by the detail! FyED-OR doesn’t seem to chunky to me and his model seems to fit into your scene. One idea that might improve his silhouette and potentially solve your concern about chunkiness is making his arms thinner. This is mainly relevant to the rectangular box taking up most of his arm. I feel making that thinner or breaking it into two parts would improve the character’s (perceived) agility. The arms might be easier to animate too since he’d have more deformable sections.

He seems to be an appropriate level of “chunky”. In theory, a zero-gravity environment would make weight distribution less of a concern anyway.

Also I like the concept art. You went through a fairly diverse set of designs before settling on the final model.
