My paper nature project follows the life cycle of an apple. There are 2 controls, each controlled by an apple. The Granny Smith(Green) advances time through 4 stages. The Red Delicious(Red) makes someone pick the apple provided it is ripe. If it is not, a sound will play indicating it.
The sound design is really solid as it sounds exactly what I’d imagine an apple being picked and falling would sound like. The animation style is very simple but clean, and the use of apples as a controller brings the whole scene together.
A way this may be improved is by adding more fruits or adding other options to interact with the apple in addition to time and picking. Maybe the branch can animate as well?
How did you switch between different animations to make it so smooth?
During the demonstration in class I was surprised by the consideration of animation sequencing. How the user could grow the apple and then eat it, or let the apple fall on the ground and pick it up. That in addition to the simple yet clean animations and solid sound effects gave me a strong point-and-click choose your own adventure game vibe!
It might be interesting if the two controller apples were attached a physical branch, and to have the wiring routed around the branch itself.
I really like the subtle nature of each of the sound effects. They end up being really well done without needing to have anything extra. They are straight and to the point.
Was there any specific reason why you used an apple for both actions of growing the apple and picking up the apple?
The progression of the apple’s growth cycle is very well conveyed through the animations, sounds, and the apple controller. Simple, but very effective.
A small basket for the picking controller might be a little more intuitive.
How did you come up with this idea with the apple? Was it personal apple picking experience?
The simple logic of this project fits well with the animation and art and the whole experience feels consistent and satisfying. I am impressed that you were able to make holes in the apples for the wires. You found a way to make the non-conductive skin work to your benefit. I love the idea of apples as controllers, as long as they’re not rotting. Maybe paper apples would have a longer shelf life. Any reason for using apples in the first place?
The animation is super smooth. I also love how you have somehow a plot going on with different endings of the apple.
I would suggest color the apple in the animation *only* so it matches with the color of the real apple controller and enhances the overall cohesiveness.
Did you decide not to color the animation because you wanted to create a paper-drawing-like effect?
