Concept Proposal & Sketch

Summary: My game will be a dark fantasy RPG bar-keeping simulator. It will focus on Grol, the owner of the Crooked Inn. Primary game mechanics rely on gathering information or story-relevant artifacts from customers in exchange for food. The art style will be vaguely inspired by early fallout game NPC interactions, with a stylized but eerily realistic portrait of individual characters being the focus of the screen. The player will also be able to customize or upgrade the Saloon in various ways, and a secret storage/trophy study is unlocked during gameplay after the first day. When changing locations or customizing the saaloon, the player will be able to go into isometric 3rd person view. Outside the inn, it is dark and eerie, as can be seen through the grimy windows directly opposite the bar counter. There are multiple dingy tables and a boar head mounted on a wall, which sings songs in an odd language (gibberish), and pours ale out of its mouth into a shallow bowl on the floor whenever it becomes more empty, which is surrounded by visibly drunk rats and mice. The entrance to the establishment is a swinging saloon door, and outside (in the shadow realm) there are rickety stables with starving, ghostly horses. The front of the building boasts only a faded sign that says “Spirits” and a decal of a boar head that appears to be laughing. It gives the strong impression of a haunted place.

Background: Grol was cursed into becoming an eerie raven-like beast when he was felled from the faerie realm and his position on the queen’s court. He was the Queen’s most faithful advisor, but after her mind was twisted by the evil dragon lord Cra, she believed him to be a traitor and banished him to the shadow realm. Although bitter due to the queen’s betrayal, he still seeks to reverse his banishment and rescue his queen from Cra’s grasp. His Saloon is his a rare community gathering place for the dejected citizens of the shadow realm, but it is also a strange place that appears and changes locations in various random places on the material plane, as well as being simultaneously in the shadow realm. This is because the veil between realms is becoming so thin that at times they overlap.
