Lukas Gandras – Game Concept Proposal

People: You play as a deformed human-like creature whose body is covered in blocky impurities, making it difficult to move around. There are no other living characters in the world, although you may encounter the frozen statues of those who were not as fortunate as you.

Places: The game takes place on a remote planet, far away from any natural source of light. A large prism in the center of the world used to be the source of energy for everything, but one day the prism’s light was extinguished by mysterious forces, plunging the planet into darkness. The environment will consist of grayscale, liminal environments, with splotches of color here and there from fragments of light that have persisted through the dark. There is no weather and the day/night cycle is nonexistent.

Things: As you explore the world, you’ll gather shards of pure light from various locations, gradually restoring your body’s original form and unlocking new movement abilities. These can be obtained by simply discovering them and walking over them, although some shards may be out of reach until you upgrade your movement later on.

Style: The game is abstract, blocky, dark, and surreal, with minor horror elements.

Gameplay: The game is intended to be an exploration-based 3D platformer with minimal story, similar to something like LIMBO. The main objective is to return the shards of light to the prism, restoring its function and bringing back color to the world.

Here’s a quick sketch I made of the world. You can see the main character, the blocky and monochrome terrain around them, and the prism in the distance, as well as the colorful patches of light scattered here and there.

I really like the concept and I’m excited to see how you will play with color! What inspired you to come up with this concept?

    1. Lukas Gandras says:

Thanks! The exploration-based gameplay with minimal story was inspired by Yume Nikki and similar RPGs. The light-related aspects of the game (prism, light impurities, blocky character design) were partially inspired by a Pokémon named Necrozma.

i think the idea of a prism and being abel to play with that idea with different forms of lighting will be very cool!

ooooo this is cool! Low key gave me “I have no mouth but I must scream” vibes. How do you plan to relay this backstory or details of the history of the world to the player, if at all?

    1. Lukas Gandras says:

There would likely be very little for the player to go off of, but I was thinking of including a few inscriptions here and there Hollow Knight style to give a glimpse into what life was like on the planet before the prism’s light went out.

I like the idea of the strange planet with a prism as the source of light. Where on this planet will it specifically take place? What will the bounds be?

    1. Lukas Gandras says:

The prism would be located on the north pole of the planet, and exploration would take place in a limited radius around it. I was thinking about using something like rocky walls to serve as the outer bounds of the map.
