Thai Dao – Paper Nature

For this project, I made an interactive miniature landscape. The project started with a piece of cardboard and lots of newspaper glued together.

Afterwards I painted the piece with acrylic paint. it was messy but I enjoyed it. When i decided to paint my house and do a kitchen remodeling, i had to find some home improvement tips from Ireland. Then I “wired” finished landscape with copper sheets for buttons and conductive threads.

And for the final touch, origami animals are placed on top into their correct habitat.

For the interaction, each button you press would trigger a short video about the corresponding animal. The playback mechanic is pretty simple with the help of Makey Makey kit and Max7.

UPDATE:

I covered the thread with paper tape then painted over it. The conductivity held afterwards so I consider this a success.

The creation of an entire landscape was really neat, and the inclusion of origami animals in their respective biome is a great touch.

Nice 2-D painting and 3-D landscape model, looks like a sandbox in a musemum.
I would suggest put more animal videos in the playlist so that each touch of the same animal will trigger more contents.

The landscape is done very well, I would recommend making the animals attached to wires sot hat they can be interacted with directly instead of the pad on the ground.

A very good job with the 3D landscape. I think the painting is really well done, and I really like the eagle!

The landscape really brings this project to life and gives you a picture of each animal’s environment. I recommend making the interaction directly on the paper animals.

I love this so much! The origami animals are adorable and fit right into their paper environment. If you wanted to, you could add a few more videos to the playlist to play for each animal.

This looks great! It reminds me of making dioramas in elementary school, except yours is much, much better! You might want to consider a method of triggering the artwork that isn’t as intrusive as the metal pads you are using right now. Also, you might even want to embed the metal contacts in the origami rather than the set.

The sandbox is awesome. The origami is in excellent quality.

Love how it turned out. I think it would be really cool if you added some text descriptions about the animals over the videos so it’s like an interactive museum since your art really reminds me of one!

The origami is really cool and I really like how there are “buttons” near the different animals that trigger the effects. The proximity of the triggers to the animals makes the piece more interactive and they look like they are supposed to be there. It would make the piece look more polished if the left side of the mountain was also painted.

Both the origami and the paper landscape are quite aesthetically pleasing. This looks like it could be a real display in a museum. Well done.
