Gavin Taylor – Paper Nature

The concept I was shooting for with this project was to create origami flowers with colored sheets of paper that, when interacted with, corresponded to real flowers of the same color. The orange flower plays a stock video of begonia flowers and the white flower corresponds to a white rose. I originally wanted to use sounds instead of video, but I think the visual aspect is much more impactful in this sense.

Getting things to work in Max wasn’t very difficult at all. It ended up being very simple, thanks to everything being previously setup. All I needed to do was add the videos. However, I wanted to add sounds, but I couldn’t get them to work with the video at the same time.  I might have overlooked something minor. Hopefully in the refined version it will be functioning.

In terms of hardware, the makey makey board is super easy to use and didn’t give me any trouble. The idea I have for containing the board and all of the wires is a flower pot of some sort. It will hold the flowers, but I’m not too sure on how I’ll work around the wires with respect to how they are connected to the flowers currently. The simplest thing I could think of was attaching them to the pedals on the origami flower.

I like how each flower wasn’t just a still image.

If you could, I’d suggest making the origami flowers better resemble the flowers that show up on the screen.

The videos are well choosen and correspond to the paper work. The paper flowers would look more organized of they are put in a container together.

Using different flowers to control the scene is very engaging.
Having the flows be more realistic (stem, leaves, etc) would fit more with the realistic video.

I like the animation with the flowers, as opposed to just a still image. I would suggest adding everything onto an organized base, to hide the wires.

The color and vibrancy of each flower are complementary to the paper flowers. I think having different paper flowers that resemble the flowers on the screen would add to the experience. I would try to incorporate a stem to the flowers with a wider area to be able to touch the flower and trigger an animation.

I like the videos you chose and the clean color palette of your origami. Adding a stage for your flowers (a flowerbed or pot, perhaps?) and some sound to go along with the visuals (even just background music) would really bring this to life!

The videos of the flowers are cool and reflect the origami successfully. I would suggest making different origami for each different flowers you have. It will be a lot more self-explanatory about what the flowers are.

Your flowers look great! I really appreciate how you matched the flower colors to the actual flowers in the videos. Perhaps you could make flowers that not only match in color but also look similar in shape to the flowers in the video. Further, adding a set to the piece could really tie the whole thing together. The first thing that comes to mind is the fake grass from sushi containers. You could put that in front of the flowers, and have everything mounted to a fake window frame or something like that.

The videos look great and it adds a lot of depth to the project. I’d try folding flowers in different styles to add more variety to it.

I really like your project! I think if you added sound effects it would really complete the piece!

This turned out awesome! I really like how the globe turned out and the controls are very clever with the paper fasteners looking like clocks.

I’m sorry this was not meant for this post!!

I love your flowers! I think it would be cool if you made the flowers into a single piece like put them in a pot or add stems and you could hide the wires in there.

I think the origami is quite pretty. Maybe the project could benefit from having a random selection of a few more images for each season.
