Minh-Chau Doan – Bio and Artworks

Hello! I am a sophomore mechanical engineer from San Jose, CA. I mainly use Photoshop and Illustrator for digital art. For traditional art, I love ceramics but am still a beginner.  I also enjoy sewing, knitting, card making, any form of collaging, and creative writing, among others.

For programming, I have learned Logo, Pascal, HTML, Scratch MIT, python, Java, and Racket through my classes. I am currently learning C. I know how to solder and have done Arduino. I did robotics in high school and have made a confetti cannon.

My creative inspirations stem from my surroundings whether it be from nature or creative endeavors I see online. Most of the time when I create, it is for my friends so they inspire a lot of my art. Some of my favorite artists include Yayoi Kusama and James Turrell. My favorite author is Patrick Ness. I also love the following tattoo artists: Tritoan Ly and Mini Lau. Some of my favorite musical artists are Oh Wonder and Groovy Room.

My ultimate artistic goal is to make something that makes me and those around me happy. Additionally, I like my art to have a bigger meaning, whether it be to the world or to myself. As an analytical and creative person I love it when my two sides can intersect to create art that connects various ideas together to become something bigger. I am more interested in learning new crafts and techniques than perfecting a select few crafts. As a result, I am still a beginner in many of my endeavors.

One of my most recent art projects was a set of plush figures that I sewed as presents to my friend group. Each member got a slightly different takoyaki (Japanese fried flour ball with octopus inside) plush since it was a snack that we all enjoyed and ate together.

This was a poster I made for my Vietnamese Student Association club.

I made this poster for my high school robotics team.

This pattern was for AR 1101.

Sushi plush I made for my friend.

Ceramic cups I made in my ceramics class.
