My project is a very large birch tree in the middle of autumn. It has red and orange leaves which respond to touch. When one holds the “ground leaf” and runs their hand through the trees’ leaves, wind chimes play, and randomized graphics of leaves falling plays on the screen.
This project was a huge commitment, much larger than I could have imagined. Every single piece of paper was individually cut and pasted onto my tree. Every leaf was painted with electric paint and wired through the tree. Modeling the tree itself also took a significant amount of time. Overall it was quite the learning process. If I were to do this project again I would most certainly make it smaller.
The project also involved a non-trivial amount of cleanup and vacuuming.
Here’s a video of me playing music with the tree (I just realized it is in portrait, I’m so sorry):
Here’s the Max Patch (all in all, I think it looks pretty good!):
It’s a really nice tree. Coming to campus, before going on the highway, there’s a lone birch tree that has always stood out from the rest of the trees near it.
I’m curious how you made your animation randomized and why you chose to make it random, as I animated mine with the expectation that the animation was set and would simply loop.
A fantastic music tree. One can imagine how much work is required to create a paper model like this. The musical tones are beautiful and in harmony with the animation on computer screen.
I would suggest wrapping the wires in thin white paper so as to make the work more natural.
Very good job with the model. I think it looks very natural and I’m glad to see you went the extra mile to add the grass to the bottom. I think it adds a base to the whole art piece, and it doesn’t feel like the tree is out of place.
The tree is very well done. I like the effort that was put into this model so that all the leaves can be interacted with. The background is really compelling when you play. Each interaction plays a note but at the cost of a leaf on the tree?. Maybe you could follow that story that the more you play the more you damage the tree. This could be you eventually lose the ability to make notes from a particular leaf.
The tree looks very nice! Your attention to detail with everything from the foliage on the ground to the multiple textures and colors used on the bark give it a lot of life. The tree gives off an almost “magical” feeling, and the entire piece is very cohesive.
The tree is beautiful, especially with the butterflies on it! The amount of time putting into making this model is obvious. The sound is also nice.
Attention to detail on the tree with the insects/bark coloring make it look real. The choice of sounds for the leaves is very pleasant as well. Well done.
I love the paper pieces you attached on the tree. The butterflies are also nice touches. I think you can push this piece further by simply folding/bending the leaves to make it look more realistic.
Your project was one of my favorites in the class as it was a simple one but so well executed and showed thought, time, and effort through and through. I was wondering as to why you chose a birch tree as your inspiration.
The tree is do well made! I really like your project because it looked very polished, but still fun and unique because of how cartoonish the tree and background is.
Your tree was impressive; it took on such an organic 3D shape from just flat sheets of paper. The white paper with brown stripes is simple, but captures the look of a birch tree nicely. Well done.
