For the final three weeks of the semester, I am going to be working with a previous project from earlier in the semester. I was very happy with how Flappy Drev turned out but at the time I had had many ideas for what else I could do with it. The game functioned correctly, looked good, and was practically complete. I wanted to add so much more to it though. I also wanted to practice releasing games for real instead of just building them and testing them on my computer only. This game would be perfect for that. Because I have a lot of it done already, I could focus mainly on improving it and deploying it in these last three weeks. To me, the scope seems perfect!
I would like to take into account the thoughts and ideas of my classmates so I will ask a couple questions at the end of this post. Before that though, I would like to insert a video of the current gameplay in the state it is in at the moment to show where it is at so far.
- Improved ice (reflection)
- pucks
- highscore
- better character
- better character animation
- main menu
- deploy
My questions include:
- Are any of these improvements unnecessary?
- What other improvements should I try to add?
- Should this game be played on mobile or pc/console? (I think mobile)
- Should the game be portrait or landscape view?
This is a great project to continue! I think all of your improvements sound like good options, but I would be especially excited to see ice reflection. I agree that mobile seems like the best option, but if you’re continuing it in Unity, it should be easy to do either or both. Landscape seems like the best view for this game.
Josiah, Thanks for the thoughts, I will take them into account! -Tim
I like your idea about having the high score record, which will definitely drive me to play again and again. I agree that mobile would be a perfect platform and maybe you can do both Android and IOS? I vote for landscape view.
Claire,
Thanks for the comments! So far it seems like people like landscape view better!

I think the mobile platform fits your game well. As for what view it should be in, I honestly think that’s up to which way you find more comfortable to hold the phone and if you want it to be a one-handed or two-handed game. Looking forward to seeing the finished project!
Laurie,
It seems like almost everyone thinks it should be mobile (which is good because it is easier for me). Thanks for the thoughts, I will keep them in mind as I continue with this project!

I like the idea of adding pucks. Maybe they have extreme physics and it includes elements of a breakout or bullet hell game.
I also wonder if you could control multiple players moving in parallel, kind of like foosball.
Professor,
The pucks could be fun to add and I have been thinking of ways to incorporate them! The foosball idea is very interesting! I have not though of something like that. Maybe I could add something like that in the next two weeks!

sweet game, love some Flappy Drev!! I agree with mobile, I could see people playing this while they cruising on the T.
I don’t think Drev should “Die”, I thought Drev likes playing hockey, how can they do this if they are dead?
I think there could be a more generative way to respawn the game, one that encourages the player to play the game again.
Teddy Balkind a 16-year-old Canadian hockey player passed while playing the ice hockey recently and I believe those in the community would love to play a game that speaks to the culture of the sport rather than call back to a tragedy.
Invite your players to celebrate the legacy of the game many have literally given their lives to play.
I was thinking about endings that maybe even state what the player did wrong as if your are the coach, or maybe the ending is words from the commentator stating what just happened on the ice….”player 99″ just cost their team the game as they passed on the open net goal and hit nothing but pole!!! soul-crushing to say the least!! the off-season starts now!”
Darren,
This is really good! I had not thought about that before. Perhaps it could be something that I could implement by the end of the semester! It’s crunch time! 🙂
