Katie Rodriguez Maquette

Based on my technical abilities and passion for the concept I decided to go with my second concept proposal, the statue with fluorescent lighting. In working on my maquette I decided to test two of the concepts going into this piece:

The Sculpting and Florescence

I quickly discovered that scale is going to be very important with this project. I will need to work a little larger than I am used to in order to incorporate the amount of detail that I want to include. I am also going to need to purchase a set of basic sculpting tools.

The Fluorescent paint works both differently and better than I thought it would. Instead of needing a black light to fluoresce I can just leave the pieces out in the light for a while and they will fluoresce when either brought into the dark or when it gets dark outside. A potential new concept could be placing this piece in an outdoor location, which would allow it to naturally gain exposure to UV and the darkness to actually exhibit the fluorescence.

In the next coming weeks I am going to be mainly focused on sculpting and painting there aren’t exact benchmarks that I can place as both stages are relatively dynamic. If I have time I would like to go through several iterations of sculpting like the one I have above. My necessary purchases include a basic sculpting set and more modeling clay.

I loved your concept, so I’m really excited to see your progress on this! I remember you mentioning that the fluorescent green paint shone the brightest. Do you have any ideas on how you plan on painting Artemis in terms of colors and how much of the sculpture will be covered in paint?

This is cool, I thought that the fluorescent paint would be showing up in black light but it’s actually glow in the dark! Do you use any visual or physical references when sculpting?

This concept was cool. I’m excited to see a more detailed model with the glow in the dark paint applied to it. What kind of tools do you use when sculpting things like this?

I am curious what you envision using as a base for this sculpture? I am also curious as to what color of clay you will use/if you will paint the clay with “normal” colors underneath the fluorescent paint?

Looks great so far, I really love how bright the colors you picked are!

I meant to ask in class, but do you have any plans for Artemis’ shield? You mentioned in your original post that she would be carrying a large shield-shaped mirror, so I was wondering if you still planned on doing that and how it’d factor into the rest of your work.

I like the vibrant colors it makes your pieces standout, I’m pumped to see how your sculptures will look when they are done!
