Concept #1 – Projector Tree
This idea was inspired by a video of a custom controller with 6 VGA ports on it, but is quite cost prohibitive because it requires 6 projectors and a computer with 6 video outputs, but I do think it would be a cool idea. The piece would use 6 projectors and what I’ve dubbed a projector ‘Tree’ to project onto all 6 walls of a room making a art piece you could walk into, and be surrounded by cool projection.

Concept #2 – Color Blinding Box
My next idea came to me when I was playing Catan with my friends and we decided to turn off the lights and just play under the LEDs, the problem is when the (white) lights went out we could no longer tell colors apart. This piece would utilize this by having a box which people could place things in and then see what it might look like if they were color blind, I was also thinking about putting ‘Carnovsky’ like art onto the walls of the piece.

Concept #3 – Projection Box
This Idea came to me after seeing the “DIET WIEGMAN” presentation in class, I thought about a box that people could shine their phone flashlights into and then after the light hits mirrors and colored something an image is ‘projected’ out the top. I was thinking about maybe making it require multiple people to use their phones on multiple sides or having different images based on the side shined in.

Help!
I would love to do #1, but it requires 6 projectors (I have 1 already) and someway of driving them so if anyone has any ideas of doing this without breaking the banks thanks.
Otherwise opinions on idea #2/#3?
The projector tree does sound cool, but I don’t know of any projectors that would be cost-efficient and strong enough to do what you’d like them to 🙁
Between the other two, I really like the projection box most. The collaborative aspect of combining projections and not knowing what will be projected out of the box are really exciting ideas, and I think people would have a great time trying to uncover all the images together. You might consider having some projections that can be “assembled” into a larger picture by shining multiple lights into the box at once, potentially with multiple possible combinations.
You might be able to figure out some complicated way to use mirrors to split up the image from one projector into 6, but that might be crazy.
The color blinding box might be cool, it might be really interesting if you could find mundane objects that we tell apart by color, and then in the box, we can’t. (for example, a tree in summer vs. in fall?). You probably thought of this already so what are you thinking? Is there anything you’re imagining? How big will this box be?
Regarding the projection box, where will the images be projected? If you have multiple projection boxes, could you create a puppet-show sort of thing where people can shine their flashlights and move the projections around and have them interact?
I really like the Color Blinding Box, especially because I have also experienced this first-hand with the LED lights in my room and how I am unable to tell colors apart depending on what LED lights I have on. I think by having such a piece be interactive would be good to show this concept to other people.
I think the color blinding box could be really cool. It helps to raise awareness about colorblindness through art.
The Color blind box seems like an interesting concept, i’d love to see what you can do with that. I’ve never realized the color thing sitting under my lights until you said it. the first concept is really cool but it seems like it’ll cost alot.
I think the projector idea is really cool, I’m pretty sure I watched the same video you did! (Bitluni?) I wonder if ITS has extra projectors in storage for when ones in classrooms fail. Maybe you could borrow some of them for your project?
As for your other ideas, I think the color blinding box would be interesting. I like the interactive element where people can place objects inside.
Unfortunately, I don’t have any ideas for concept #1, but I really like the idea of concept #2, it reminds me of the tik tok trends where people would either paint a picture or do their makeup with their LEDs on in their room, and see how the color combinations looked. I think that would be really cool, as well as the color blindness idea.
The phone projection seems like a good idea. I feel like the interactivity is really cool. You may want to consider the use of prisms because then you could do some type of light splitting with the projection.
I love the second concept! I have always loved the weird effects you can create with colored LEDs and colored objects. It’s so cool to see something appear to change colors.
For the projectors, you could see if you can scrounge up a few from people, maybe see if you could borrow them just for a temporary creation?
The third concept is very cool although I have no idea how that works, but I like the thought of it requiring more than one phone, it makes it a bit more interactive in a way.
For concept 1, like others said it might be possible to do with just 1 projector using a series of mirrors? If you were going to try that you could try planning it out by setting up a scene in a raytracing engine (ie. blender) and getting the light to go where you want. Between concepts 2 and 3, I think I like concept 3 better, especially the idea of combining multiple images depending on different sides of the box being lit.
1. You may be able to borrow projectors from ATC (not sure you could convince them about 5 though)
2. Cool idea. I wonder if it’s a bit “one-liner-ish” and might not provide enough of a challenge to sustain you for a term. But perhaps you could broaden it to some kind of wider exploration of the shifts in perception possible with colored lights on colored surfaces.
3. This sounds really fun and could provide an interesting context for experimentation.
Maybe you could see if they’re selling projectors for cheap at Goodwill or Savers? It’d also be worth it to check Facebook marketplace or start asking around in your friend groups. You can probably get away with just 5 total projector since I imagine it would be hard to cover the entire floor. I love the projector tree idea so I really hope it can come to fruition!
I also really like the third concept! Maybe multiple phones together could create some sort of scene or you could change the image shown by pressing something. There’s a lot of creative ways you could take this concept.
