Polish and Present – David Mahany

on

Oops I forgot to post last week, so here’s what I would have said:

This week I finally got around to laser cutting my acrylic at the makerspace, and it went pretty well after I did some test cuts and found a good laser power to use.

Here you can see the three layers I will glue together to create the chutes for the water (I cut with the film on to help it stay clean). I also cut a couple small squares both as test cuts and to use for testing the acrylic glue.

I haven’t glued the layers together yet, but here is what it looks like roughly assembled with various amounts of room lighting:

As expected, when the lights are on the LED light falloff is much more noticeable. However, I think that with the layers glued (there will definitely be bubbles/imperfections) and water inside, it should help in this area. Interestingly, there is also a noticeable difference in the amount of light depending on the angle you look at it from.

The electronics inside are currently complete, and I was able to connect the ESP32 to the wifi in order to fetch weather data. Right now the LEDs are just doing a simple demo program, but this week I will set them up to have different patterns depending on the weather. I also just submitted my final prints to the 3D print queue, and they should hopefully be done in a few days. I want to try to glue the acrylic earlyish this week so I can have as much time as possible to try to fix any leaks, but we’ll see how the timing works out because I have multiple other class projects to work on as well.
