An Artist for the Future
Shih Chieh was born in Taiwan. He grew up exploring the bustling life of the street markets around his family home. The lights, life, people, and objects of these street markets eventually became a jumping off point for his art. One of his first sculptures included pumping highlighter ink mixed with water through plastic tubing to make a sort of glowing pseudo circulatory system. His art only kept evolving from there. His pieces always focused on making art out of everyday objects. He even did an exhibit at the Worcester Art Museum entitled Reusable Universes. This art exhibit was much like many of his others it included kinetic sculptures and the creation of a sort-of alien life.
Other galleries he put together quite similarly were the Ronald Feldman Gallery and an exhibit entitled the Bright Beneath for the Smithsonian following an artist fellowship studying bioluminescence.
A piece that stands out in my mind is Gastress, a monumental undertaking in which Shih Cheih transformed a Victorian chandelier into a living creature. While I could spend a very long time talking about this piece, I think it is better spoken for in seeing it yourself.
