Introduction – Sydney Smith

on

HI, my name is Sydney Smith, and I am from a small town in Central New York called Moravia. While at home I love camping, swimming, boating, gardening, and hanging out with friends and family. I really enjoy crafting to relax in my everyday life. I haven’t done much drawing or painting except for in an art class last year. I really enjoy looking at art and I appreciate it whenever I see it. I have a little bit of experience with digital art, but no experience with tech or programming and just basic computer and electronic skills. I never did much traditional art in high school, but I loved singing, playing the clarinet and participating in my school’s musical every year. My grandma taught me how to sew, knit, crochet, embroider, cross-stitch, and and do pretty much everything crafty. Over the course of my life I have knit dish clothes, socks, a hat, a tank top, blankets, little bumblebees, a sock monkey, and festive hand towels! I have also done a Bob Ross painting as you can see in my portfolio. In D-term of last year, I did three awesome projects in a class with Prof. Rosenstock, which I will put last in the order of pictures. I am so excited to start working on a project and to see what all of you guys come up with!

I give you the CUTE Badge. Your works with the bee theme is really cute, especially the bee on the top of the photos. The honeycomb pattern would be great to put on a wall. The Santa and Snowman fall under the cute badge as well, they are great festive projects!

Cute! I love the different pieces you did with the bee theme and the kitchen towels you made have a nice kind of home-y familiarity to them that really lets the cuteness shine through. I also think your Lake piece is a cute tribute to your home that really well done!

Familiar! I remember seeing you working on making the Lake piece when you were laser cutting in the prototyping lab and I am amazed to finally see the final piece. Seeing all the layers and how you used the added acrylic to change the perception of depth is a really creative idea.

Cute – As someone who has one of those crotcheted bumble bees in my room, made by you, I can confirm it is a really cute piece to decorate a desk with. Your lantern is also on the same theme, very cute! But you should include pictures of it lit up, it looks even better!!

Gorgeous – That laser cut topographic map of the lake is awesome! I like how you used different shades of blue to give it a sense of depth. I can’t tell if its outlined with marker/paint or the cutting marks but regardless, the outlines also give it a really cool graphic feel as well.

cute – I really love all the Bees and bee-related art that you have made, I think bees are cool and your knit bee is why I give the ‘cute’ tag.

GORGEOUS! I can’t stop looking at that Raquette Lake piece – staring through the blue into the deeper layers is transfixing. Very clever use of (I assume) laser cutting!

You definitely have some really cute and clever stuff there (that is two badges, but I don’t know how else to describe those christmasy oven napkin things. I like the river cutout, would like to see it in 3D (that is, in person). Also, would like to hear your music sometime! (feel free to add it on to this page if you can!)

Cute! I really like the bee theme you have going, the crochet bee is so good! I really like the hexagon pattern on the lamp as well, it’s very clean.

Cute and gorgeous! I love the laser cut lake, the shades of blue are very pretty. The bee lamp is very cute too! The design and colors/materials you picked look very clean. I’d love to see it lit up!
