Who am I?
Hi everyone, my name is Casey Gosselin. I’m a senior double majoring in Robotics and Mechanical Engineering. I’m from the small town of Northbridge Massachusetts, about 15-20 minutes south of Worcester. When I was younger, I enjoyed drawing and painting and eventually started taking art classes sometime in middle school. At one point, I wanted to be a full on artist when I grew up. Needless to say, time moved on and I realized I wanted to be an engineer. However, I still had an interest in art.
When I took the video production class at WPI, I recreated a scene from the film, Reservoir Dogs. This involved setting up multiple cameras, lighting, and creating props such as a homemade blood squib. Each year at WPI, I’ve created a different type of lamp sculpture. Freshman year I built a robot lamp that had several usb outlets and a phone holder. Sophomore year was a lamp built from an old Mathworks model rocket frame. Junior year was a 3D printed moon lithophane lamp.
I would say I have a good background in technology. Being a Robotics major and working as an Electrical Engineering Intern for several years have taught me significant electrical and programming skills. I also have experience in CAD and 3D printing. I really enjoy 3D printing because of the wide range of uses for it. You could print something practical like a part for a robot or something artistic like a vase, frame, or a contemporary/abstract model. Recently, I’ve been wanting to try printing flexible materials.
My experience with digital and traditional art varies. I wouldn’t say I ‘specialize’ in a specific type of art. I enjoy making something physical or practical over drawing or painting something. I realized this when I took a 3D Visualization and Spatialization class here at WPI. Being able to make something 3-Dimensional and move around it to see different angles helped me appreciate each project a little bit more.
Some other creative things I like to do include photography, especifically night or drone photography. The amount of work and time that goes into these mediums makes a good photo really rewarding to me. The experience of sitting out under the stars for a while as your camera is taking a long exposure is so relaxing.
I’m super excited to combine my technical skills with my artistic skills throughout this class. Good luck everyone on your projects!
Striking! That’s an amazing shot of the moon. The color of the moon in this photo looks phenomenal. I always get reminded how hard it is to take a decent photo of the night sky and how powerful the equipment needs to be whenever I try to take a picture of it using my dinky phone camera and non-existent photography skills.
Creative, The different lamps that you’ve created are so cool. The different sizes and uses of the lamps show how creative you can get. The Scene you did was amazing, your use of props, lighting and different camera angles show that you put a lot of creative thought into your scene.
Impressive! The lamps you created are so cool and distinctly unique from each other both from a creative and technical standpoint. It is clear when looking at the pieces you’ve created that you have continued learning and being inspired by different aspects of your life. With your understanding of the technical and creative backgrounds for this project work I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Gorgeous! I love the photos of the moon and night-time landscape you posted here. I really think you did a great job capturing an amazing composition while also not having everything overexposed. I know how hard it can be to donight-time photography, and think you did a great job!
Inventive – I love the juxtaposition between the old pipes and lightbulb with a new outlet and phone holder. The moon lamp is amazing!! I always wonder with the moon lamps though, did you make the back look like the actual back of the moon or is it a double of the front face? Having a giant rocket lamp would really pull a room together, I would buy one. I like that its blue light, too, gives it more of the space/high tech vibe.
detailed – your night photography is very well done. I could never achieve such high-quality photos.
INVENTIVE! I really thought you’d outdone yourself with the rocket lamp… but the moon is phenomenal. I also appreciate the attention to detail in the Reservoir Dogs recreation – I can imagine it took a lot of effort to get those movements just right.
Dark. It seems an odd label to apply to the post with the really cool lamps (they really are cool, hope they’re useful in the house too!), but that’s probably what it takes for those lights to shine. I think it’s just because I saw quite a lot of squid ink/blood in that video. I thought it was really cool seeing what you did in that Reservoir Dogs video! There’s a lot of detail in it, I can’t imagine how much effort it must have been to do that.
(and the night photography is technically in the dark)
Inventive! The different lamps are really cool, each of them is so unique! I also find night photography really interesting to look at, but I’ve never really gotten around to doing it myself.
Inventive: I really like your lamps! I appreciate how you reused various things such as pipes and the rocket frame to create an artistic piece, the robot one gives me steampunk vibes!
Clever – I would give you the clever badge. I think it is so cool to create a lamp for each year you’ve been at school. It seems like a good way to recall old memories of what happened in those years. They are also super impressive!
