Charles Kittler – Introduction

For those who don’t like titles, my name is Charles (Charlie) Kittler. I’m an RBE and CS double major, from a town called Natick which is about 45 minutes east of Worcester. Creating things and being creative is something that I’ve been doing for a large portion of my life, and it is a big part of who I am. So when I’m not making robots, art is one of the ways that I enjoy expressing my passion for creation.

Here at WPI I have been able to stretch my artistic mussels by exploring the mediums of digital art, drawing, and 2D animation. Along with greatly increasing my electronics and coding skills, here are some of my favorite/most recent projects.

Funny! I enjoyed your animation, The Great Getaway. With a title like “The Great Getaway,” the simplicity of the escape made it comical. The sound effect you chose for the prisoner and his rectangular shape as he escapes especially made me laugh 🙂

Cute – I also loved the way the prisoner formed to the shape of the glass, and I like that you personified the sack of flour that when he leaked I was worried about him “bleeding.” The crow in the animorph looks extremely relaxed, and I feel like if I passed him in the streets he would offer me something illegal but in an almost friendly way. The shading of his hoodie is also very well done, he is really distinguishable from the background which can be difficult in a monochrome piece.

Funny. I like the animations a lot, the prison one mixed the sound you chose made it enjoyable to watch. I really like the sack animation because the red sack stood out from the black and white background, and it left color behind as it moved through the scene. The sack falling at the end made me laugh.

Striking! The shading on your crow animorph piece is amazing it really comes to life in a way that I can’t put my finger on exactly, but it has this sort of fullness and life to it that can often get lost in drawings. Its a really cool piece that honestly sticks with me a lot more than your other more colorful and flashy pieces.

Dark! I really like the drawings you’ve displayed here and with some of them, I see a dark theme arising with the use of just pencil. I think your shading and use of the dark with light really brings out your pieces.

Dark! I agree with AJ about the dark theme you convey with just shading and grayscale colors. Juxtaposed with your pencil works, I think the tripteron robot takes on a darker look: I think of some kind of hulking three legged beast leaning down. (Tripteron kinematics are really cool too!)

  7. cjgosselin says:

Dark: I agree with everyone above. Your use of pencil to show objects such as the skull or crow create an ominous theme. The jagged edges and asymmetrical shape of the tripteron robot also add to this theme.

FUNNY! As others have mentioned, both short animations you showed here communicate their humor well – I really like the implication that the mustache gave the prisoner the power (or just the courage) to become box-shaped.

  9. tshah says:

Funny! I rewatched the mustache one several times over, and it is really funny the way the man turns into a … box? Guess they make human boxes now. It is a bit choppy, but it is very expressive, good job with the emotions there! Wait a second… normally thinking outside the box is encouraged, is there a pun going on there? Something about going outside as a box?

  10. David says:

Dark; I agree with the others about the monochrome shading giving the drawings a cool, ominous atmosphere. Though I did also think your animation was pretty funny!

  11. Sydney says:

Funny – Your animations were comical and cute. I especially liked the one with the little bag.
