Who am I?
My name is Katie Rodriguez. I am a Biochemistry and Biology/Biotechnology double major from a generally unremarkable suburban town in Pennsylvania. While my town itself is only known for having an absurd amount of traffic lights, growing up a train ride away from the cultural hub that is the city of Philadelphia was exceptionally influential.
Where I Want Art to Take Me
I have always been interested in the intersection of art and science. All too often the artistic representations of scientific phenomena found in textbooks are critiqued or ridiculed by teachers and professors. In the future I hope to combine my passions of digital art and science to create more accurate models for both teaching and research.
My Experience with Art
I began pursuing art at a very young age (although if you could call what I was working on “art” was highly debatable). I used it as a medium for self expression and, well, fun. As I got older I moved away from the crayons and markers of my childhood and picked up calligraphy pens and clay, two passions that stuck with me through college.
When I entered college I, however, took my art in a new direction. I began studying digital art and design including 3D modeling and animation. These quickly became my main forms of art as all I needed to pursue them was my laptop which, being honest, I always had handy anyways.
My creative inspirations often vary from piece to piece. My art will sometimes represent my mood or emotions as a route of expression. However, sometimes, I am just inspired by other forms of art that I participate in, one of which being marching band. My most recent project, in fact, was a design for our upcoming marching show based on selections from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I am also a huge dog lover and my pets are often an inspiration for me, as can be seen in my featured photo!
Detailed! Your featured photo of your dogs are so incredibly detailed. All the lines are so precise and each color was clearly carefully chosen. Even the colorful background had been given much attention and it complements the dogs well. I love the life you gave in the dogs’ eyes!
thought-provoking – I think it’s really cool that one of your goals in art is to integrate it more with science, often times a lot of those theoretical models and things are created more for an artistic representation anyways, so you might as well make them more interesting. I think it could also be a cool theme to work into your project this term. The glass piece with I think flowers inside it? maybe just colored dye that looks like flowers, I love the way the glass warps the light and colors.
Creative. The many art forms you’ve been using are great! I love the 3d modeling you did on the admiral, watching the video made me want to yell “it’s a Trap”. Your creativity is shown through the many different types of art that you’ve done. Your dogos are amazing, their colors mixed with the background helps them pop even more and shows off the colors of their coats.
Shiny! I really liked seeing your creations such as the bowl and mug. I have done a few things with pottery but would also really like to try glassblowing and stained glass. The many colors in the glass make the light shine through differently which is so cool.
Shiny. I love your glass works, your use of color and form makes the light refract in interesting ways creating pretty highlights. I also like your diorama piece, the way you blend natural scenes with simpler geometric shapes is very cool.
familiar, I enjoyed seeing the 3D model of admiral Ackbar, because I also made a piece of art with him in it, I didn’t include it in my post because It did not photograph well.
Shiny: I like the use of clay to make physicals objects. The color pallete on the band graphis really cool as well. Your use of shadows on the pictures makes them extremely detailed. The shine in their eyes looks very realistic to me.
IMPRESSIVE! I haven’t met many people who work with glass – that’s a very cool skill to have, and I like what you’ve done with it.
Impressive! I like glass stuff, dogs and calligraphy, so they’re all cool. Hope you get to post some calligraphy sometime. I especially like the expressions on your dogs. To be honest, normally I’m not the biggest fan of that style of art your dogs are drawn, but I can’t help really liking it in this case! Good job!
Impressive! Glass working is really impressive to me, and I think they came out looking really interesting! You seem to have quite a nice range of skills!
Colorful – The color work and shading on your pieces are super impressive, and I also love your glass work, as I always been interested in that.
