My Final Makey Makey Game

on

How to assess a game. Did I focus on the player experience? Somewhat. I ideally did not want the player to have egg or maraschino cherries all over their fingers when they were done. My controller idea came to me literally over breakfast, yogurt containers with their labels ripped off. The idea that a shopper would get their fingers sticky is actually one of my personal experiences from shopping. I always think I have to wash the grime of the grocery store off when I get home. I think the game was a little too easy, though, shoppers really do not have to navigate around more than one robot in the store at a time. I think I could have made the obstacles a little larger so the shopper had to wait behind something in order to get moving along after allowing a robot to pass. This is also my personal experience of the robot at the grocery store. The concept that this game was based on a race to the finish is real as well. Generally, I am in such a rush to get out of the store that I leave things behind. And, though you could potentially slip on a spill on the floor (the obstacles) you most likely would not get hurt my them. This is not reflected well in the game. Originally, I wanted the game to be a timed effort with a leader board. The player would race against people who had played before and see if they could navigate around the robot more skillfully.

I would also approach the artwork somewhat differently the next time. I figured out in the later stages that I could save larger images and have better resolution in the game. My grocery store shelves were somewhat fuzzy. On the one hand, the fuzziness portrayed a sense of distance, on the other, it was difficult to read some of the shapes. Further, I also planned on adding a grocery cart to the character but ran out of time in the end to both implement it and animate it.

The silliness of this activity was enjoyable for me as a creator. I learned a great deal about how to produce a 2D game. I found the pace of the class to be just right as well. The tutorial online made it much easier to create a working prototype. I appreciated being able to work at home in my own time. Because of this, I would not hesitate to do it again.
