The initial sprites for my game include the following elements:
– Grass & dirt “meta tiles”
– Cliff face tiles
– 2 Trees
– Interior house tiles
– 3 Cats
For the outdoor tileset, I wanted to create metatiles that could be highly adaptable. Using a limited color palette made this somewhat difficult. I struggled to distinguish grass from dirt and ended up attempting to convey the difference by using certain colors exclusively on one element or the other.
The house interior and cats used a warmer (though still limited) color palette in order to contrast heavily with the outdoors. This resulted in difficulty providing detail in this set of tiles. The wood looks far more run-down than intended, and the walls lack texture. I will likely go with a new and unique color palette for the cats in the game, in order to make them the most distinct and eye-catching aspect of the game.
The trees are my favorite sprites I’ve created so far. I think they turned out the best because I used the full range of colors offered by the palette, and the result is a deeper level of detail with the available highlights and shadows.
The full sprite sheet contains 64 tiles, each sized at 32×32 pixels.

Your trees are gorgeous. I had never heard of mini tiles before you described them. Your work was in the back of my head as I was working on my project. You seem so well informed in procedural content. Where is your color palette coming from btw?
