“I hardly know, sir, just at present – at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.” ~ Alice in Wonderland ~ Lewis Carroll
My name is Karen Royer. I am originally from upstate NY. I grew up with a sheltered New England upbringing but we moved around a lot. I have 5 siblings but only one brother. I generally consider myself to be privileged and a little dense. This gets in the way – a lot. I like to work hard and play hard. I try to behave ethically and morally. I identify as a creative, a maker and a self sufficient, practical artist and have been working professionally since 1988.
Once a year or so, I update my bubble map. It reminds me of many aspects of who I am and what my goals are. My bubble map is really full for two reasons, 1 – I have been out of college for more than 30 years and 2 – I have become confident in my ability to learn new things as I continue to try new things. The bubble map helps me to recognize that my professional choices must include creative opportunities.
My inspirational process usually goes something like this…I see something interesting or intriguing. I want to know how it works or want to understand it better.
I need to experience it in order to understand it. Best way to experience it is to do it. I find inspiration everywhere and take copious pictures. I like to work with materials that are easy to find and ordinary. I want to make them extraordinary.
I studied textile making and clothing design in college. I learned folk art painting, sculpting, mold making, 3D modeling, wire weaving, digital painting and vector art, jewelry making while raising 3 children. I learned programming in the early 1980s and continued to pursue various languages and platforms over the years including Flash, action script, web design, Fortran, Java, Javascript, and C++.
I absolutely love modeling in 3D and texturing the results. Digital painting allows me so much more freedom to fix mistakes.
During the spring of 2022, I intend to work on improving my coding skills. I am primarily interested in continuing to work on making my Millefiori software responsive and useful for a broad range of platforms. Further, I hope my work will help me to fix my webpage to make it more responsive as well.

impressive – Working with a drill that is powerful but still having the control to get the smallest of details is impressive to me!

Much of your work seems complex and very interesting. The egg especially seems both intricate and delicate.
Impressive! So patient and detailed work. The gestures and composition of pieces are something to strive for in my own works. Your play with Tetradic colors is awesome!
