Introduction: John Stegeman

Hello,

My name is John Stegeman and I am an RBE senior here at WPI.  I am taking the light art practicum after taking Architecture, 2D Animation, 3D Animation, as well as Musical Robotics while at WPI.  Beyond these classes at WPI my experience with art classes is pottery and some painting and drawing classes from highschool. Unfortunately outside of classes, I have never had time to really dive in depth and spend much time on practicing art; I have always been busy with other projects.

From a technical standpoint I have a much stronger background. I have experience with most commercial/industrial manufacturing methods in production environments including laser cutters, waterjets, mills, welding, woodwork, molding, and many other methods. I also have lots of practice programming and I have worked in production environments with assembly, c, c++, c#, java, javascript, python, web development, SQL, MongoDB, Hazelcast, and numerous other technologies. Beyond production environments, I have experience with Matlab, Labview, Ruby, Lua, R, and several others. I have done robotic museum exhibits for NASA, done contract programming and engineering, and I have owned a Smart Infrastructure, Internet of Things company, Labyrinth Technologies, for several years.

For me, light art design and my other art classes are a way to integrate aesthetics and design into the work I do with people, businesses, and cities. I hope to be able to use knowledge I gain from these endeavors in art to help beautify cities and businesses at the same time as smart technology is rolled out across the country.

Below are some of my recent projects:

#LightMyStL street lights and decorative strips on Market Street in St. Louis Missouri done by my company Labyrinth Technologies. These lights have colored RGB strips behind the streetlights that are wirelessly controllable in real time.

Another image of the streetlights but shown on December 24th with Christmas themed colors. These lights are installed on a 1.25 mile stretch of the main street in front of the arch, and installation is continuing to install them in a 20×20 block area in downtown St. Louis.

This is a building design sketch done in the WPI AR2114 Architecture class for a project.

Alternate sketch view of the building design.

This is an animation done in the WPI AR2222 2D Animation class. The animation was for a project where we had to animate a flour sack in a barn.
