Project Proposal: John Stegeman

I’ve had an idea or two about what I could do for the project. The first concept is more thought out and I know how to make it work. The second concept is more of an unknown and more of an experimentation project.

Concept 1:

This concept utilizes an LED strip to do a super slow motion scan of an image. The strip just looks like fading colors to the human eye, but when viewed with long exposure and motion, the image appears.  It would scroll through a batch of many images to create varieties of patterns to view.

Concept 1-Alt:

This is a variant of the previous concept, except this time the LED strip is moved slowly back and forth like a windshield wiper to reveal the image with long exposures of a camera.

Concept 2:

This concept is a little more out there compared with the other one. While maybe not as technically driven, the effects could be more interesting. The idea would be to mount a mirror on a membrane that sound hits. When the sound hits the membrane, the membrane with resonate and cause the mirror to alter its angle in some kind of looping pattern.  A laser pointer (or several) would be pointed at the mirror to visualize these vibrations of sound.  The source of the sound could be a human voice, a sound on a phone, or a tone generator. What might also be interesting is strobing the laser to create different effects so that not the whole pattern is shown, but rather subsets of the pattern.
