Introduction: Jared Grimm

I am a Junior computer science major, from Central New Jersey. The beginning of my art experience stemmed from the scenic views from where I grew up, which got me interested in photography. My favorite type of photography is long exposure shots of the milky way. The classes I have taken so far at WPI have increased my passion for digital arts, whether editing the pictures I take in Photoshop and lightroom, to video editing and animation. Digital media allows me to express myself better considering my lack of drawing and hand skills. I also enjoy working with people, so most of my adventures were with friends or other photographers in the area. I believe the influence and critiques of others is important to help everyone accomplish their goals. With that in mind, my greatest influence has been my older brother Tyler, who is in the marketing business, and does a lot of photography, video editing, and design layout for his various companies to best sell his products.

I have IT and programming experience with languages like visual basic, C/C++, Java and HTML. I have designed websites, created software applications for hospitals, and iPhone applications.  While doing IT work, I worked in residential, business, and healthcare facilities and got to use a wide range of technology and applications, and view the different ways various systems, from networks to hospital rooms can be laid out electronically.

Besides Digital art, I also play guitar. I took lessons back in middle school and stopped for a while during high school, then started up again freshman year at WPI playing with my roommate and other people in my house. I especially like acoustic and finger picking style music, like that of Ben Howard. I find both music and art to be a relaxing escape from my usual work.

As a computer scientist, I wish to solve problems for people and aid their everyday life. I think art has a large influence on the effectiveness of technology. If software is not visually appealing or neat and organized to use, it will degrade productivity rather than augment it. Whether I have a career in cyber security, software engineering, or IT, I plan to bring my artistic and creative knowledge to look for new solutions and ways to have technology better interface with people’s everyday lives and continue to spark creativity and passion.

Below are some of my more recent pictures and Photoshop creations, both from classes and personal  projects, as well as one of my better pieces of traditional art.
