DARIUSTWIN (Darren Pearson)

Interview with Darius Twin-M O W

Darren Pearson aka DARIUSTWIN is a 39 year old light painting photographer based in Southern California. He started off as an illustrator doing graphic design work after graduating from UC Santa Barbara with a Bachelors of Arts in Film and Digital Media. Here are some of his early illustrations:

He started doing light painting in 2007 after being inspired by seeing images of Picasso painting with light in his roommate’s photography book.

To create a light painting you must have three things:

  1. Dark environment
  2. Camera (that can keep shutter open for extended time)
  3. Light source

In a dark environment you open a camera’s shutter and paint a shape with a light pointing at the camera. With the long exposure time, the light appears solid in the final image. It is hard because you can only see what your painting looks like after you close the camera shutter. It all must be done freehand in one take. Darren Pearson has done work in commercials for Apple, Honda, and Brisk Iced Tea. Pearson loves to travel and uses natural landscape environments to add depth to his work. Mainly his popular pieces deal with skeletons, dinosaurs, and animals.

That octopus was insane! It’s just crazy how much you can do with a single phone’s LED torch and a long exposure camera.
