Light Artist – Janne Parviainen

Janne is a Finnish artist who works with light paintings, oil paintings and drawings. He first discovered light paintings by accident when nudging his camera during a long exposure. Later he would create photos by moving the camera, and eventually ended up at light painting. He’s well known for his light figures and skeletons that are inspired by the environment. He uses abandoned buildings and environments to inspire his work. Janne follows the drawings, and allows for improvisation and spontaneity in his work. He prizes the story of art pieces most, and looks forward to light art with deeper stories and messages going forward.

Techniques

Janne traces human bodies in the few seconds his camera allows him to capture the light. He also uses the environment and forced perspectives to tell a story. In many pieces, he starts with a plan, and ends up somewhere different, allowing the art to lead the piece.

The way how he paints all of these straight lines across the room is just insane. The growth of modern image recording technologies really enables light artists who experiment with long exposure time to express their creativity.
