Artist Introduction

Derek Hoffend is an artist that combines light, sculpture and audio to create his pieces. He has years of past experience in electronic music and aspires to create immersive sound for his audience. Derek is also a professor of sound design at Lesley University, using his experience to teach and inspire others.

Artist’s Works

Derek combines audio, light, and audience interaction to create an immersive experience.

Materials:

  • LED lights
  • Acrylic
  • Motion sensors
  • Synthesized audio

Derek Hoffend is also investigating using synthetic audio for therapeutic purposes.

Materials:  Polyester Drafting Film, RGB LED Strips, Sound, Speakers, Microcontrollers, Audio Equipment

Derek aimed to make an area to promote feelings of relaxation.

Materials: Sound, Electronics, Latex, PVC tubing, Electroluminescent Wire, Computer, Audio Hardware, Wood

This piece combines interactive objects and a responsive sound environment. The props are inspired by human organs and body parts.

    I really like how Derek can use intense coloured lights to fill out the entire room. It’s a really simple yet powerful way of expressing ideas.
