Laser Board Final Documentation – Nathan Reed

on

The “Laser Board” is a interactive piece of art where viewers can create their own patterns and images by manipulating a number of magnetic components on a steel board. There are two types of components on the board, lasers and prisms. The lasers consist of a wood base with a laser strapped on top and a magnet imbedded underneath. The prisms consist of a prism attached to plywood with epoxy and a magnet attached to the bottom of the plywood with epoxy. A wooden box was created to house the laser wiring and a fog machine was purchased to make the lasers visible in the fog.

The entire piece is designed to be interactive by allowing for viewers to play with different prism and laser layouts. This interactivity encourages viewers to think creatively and create their own art within the piece. It also means that there are infinitely many ways to arrange the art and create new patterns and images. After setting up the art piece in my garage to allow for continuous use of the fog machine, I captured a number of images of different prism arrangements and recorded a video of a couple configurations with the fog blowing past.

That looks very pretty! I really wish fuller doesn’t have these smoke detectors so we can really have fun with them!

The whole piece really comes together after you get the lighting and smoke working together. Looks very outstanding to me!
