Maquette

For this project I wanted to use an optical illusion to affect how people would view the art. After doing a decent bit of research I landed on the this concept. Below is a piece that is a place holder of how the colors worked with what I wanted to do. It is going to be done on blue and red on an gel plastic sheet.

For a design it may be similar to this type of line work but each color would not be a copy of each other. The idea is to have each color be its own design but together it would make one complete design.

This would be done so that a special effect can be achieved. By overlaying tined plastic we can make certain colors disappear. As a proof of concept I made the same design as above but colored over it after. by tinting areas with red the red will obviously disappear and only show the blue drawing and vice versa. This will make it an interactive piece of art. I would have all of this backlit with LEDs to make it pop.

Fallback concept:

Since I realize that my current main concept does not make light the main focus and instead looks more at color which is affected by light. As a backup concept I would be interested in making a zoetrope that also uses the Carnovsky RGB style of drawing. A zoetrope is a pre-film animation device that creates the illusion of movement. I would pair this with the overlaid images red green and blue images that Carnovsky uses. If I were to place an led in the middle of the zoetrope that changed between 3 colors it would be able to make 3 animations.

I like the first concept a lot, and I think that with some experimentation you can get it to work. You will just need to play with colors and the plastic films.

I think your first concept could work and turn out really cool! I like how individually the colors will create their own image and together they would create a whole new one!

I like the interactive nature of both pieces and the intentional interaction that is needed to complete the piece!

I like the idea of using the zoetrope with the leds. Do you think you could use switching between the three colors to make a story with the animation. Just an example would be moving between three stages of life, or something like that.

I like seeing how you practiced the small concept related to the project, which will end up being such a huge part! I think your concept is really cool. Keep up the good work!

  6. I’m very intrigued by this idea and curious to see how it will look.

And just to be clear – I’m satisfied that this counts as “light art” so no worries on that front. (Although I think zooetropes are super cool too)
