When beginning the idea of what I wanted to do with my light art project I quickly realized my fascination with optical illusions. These are things that use the brains own programming to make us see something that is not there. Optical illusions come in many different forms from impossible shapes to pictures that seem to move.
While art and optical illusions have crossed paths before I wanted to mix abuse different types of optical illusions and see how far I could take it

Concept 1:
This is the first idea I had and is the idea I want to create most. This was the concept of using the the optical illusion used in this picture.

This cube above appears quite normal at first glance. But when only the center squares from each side are shown it reveals that they are the same color. This is because of one side being in a shadow and the shading around the squares I think. I am still exactly sure how this optical illusion works so I want to look into it more as well.

Concept 2:
When watching other peoples presentation on light artist I was blown away by Carnovsky who are a Milan based art and design duo comprised of Francesco Rugi and Silvia Quintanilla.

This effect is done by printing red green and blue pictures on top of the same canvas. When a red light is shown on the canvas, it will make the entire canvas red. by doing this it will make the red lines seem to disappear and showing what seems to be a different image than before. I think that this same concept could be applied in many different ways that I want to think over more in the future.

These are cool ideas! I really liked Carnovsky too during the presentations, so I think personally would go with your second concept. Maybe you can incorporate the optical illusion with regards to the colors from the first concept into the drawing/paintings so that they are all the same color but create one image that appears to have different colors when light is shone on it/shadows are present!
I really think that the second concept would be very interesting as a final project, you could choose a theme for each layer of the project.
I think you could get some really cool effects with the second concept, especially if you focus on the way the colors change under different lights. Do you have any ideas on how you would structure it? I would be interested to see how you translate the concept into reality!
I think that the optical illusion would be super cool if you could do it, although I can’t think of a way I would be able to make something like that with light. But if you went with your second idea I think you could get some very cool looking art, plus maybe you could incorporate different optical illusions within the different colors.
I think the optical illusions project idea is really cool and unique however Im unsure on where to take it with light art, the second option however is definitely an awesome fallback option and does share some ‘optical illusion’ feel to it with the ability to completely change and combine the image with different colored lights shining on it.
I think doing concept 1 with an optical illusion would be really fun where the same light could shine on different objects but based on the positioning, it would show different colors. Something that this reminds me of is the art on WPI’s library where by strategically placing the material, the artist was able to create a rainbow of colors.
im interested in what what you are planing do do with the Carnovsky concept. I think that style will work well with an illusion.
I think concept one is the most interested one because it might allow for more expression.
