Maquette – Minh-Chau Doan

Proof of Concept:

I tested out extending the LED by soldering the LED to some electrical wiring. This video shows that this was a pretty simple task. The solder connection was not as strong as I would like so I taped the wire to the LED as well. I will try to get a better solder connection as I wired up more LEDs. I will also play with the Arduino to have the LED only light up as one color and to light up in a sequence.

I also made a prototype of the lanterns using paper and plastic cups, plastic straws, bamboo stirring sticks, paper and hot glue. This showed me that the lanterns were feasible to make. When I make the actual lanterns, I want them to be smaller than this prototype size.

This sketch shows how I think the art piece will be arranged:

This sketch shows my thought process where the moon will have a spinning component inside to display shadow art.

Shopping List:

  • Assorted Fabrics (from fabric store)
  • Tissue Paper / Translucent Paper (from craft store)
  • Bamboo sticks (bought from Amazon, coming in)
  • Arduino and LEDS (acquired)
  • Electrical Wire (acquired, can get more on campus)
  • Modpodge (from craft store)
  • Light Socket Cord (Amazon)

Your lantern turned out very well! I think for your next steps the lantern with the spinning inner part might be the trickiest, especially if you’re trying to hide the parts that make the spinning happen. It might be worth considering using just a strip of paper for the man animation rather than a whole cylinder the size of the inner layer.

  2. This is a nice proof of concept maquette. I’m very intrigued by the spinning moon lantern, although I admit I don’t quite understand how it will work. Is it going to be a zoetrope type thing with multiple “frames” of the image?

Also, this is only slightly related to your project, but I thought you might be interested in this article about an artist lantern project in Boston’s Chinatown that I saw in the Globe today: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/09/22/lifestyle/artist-lights-up-chinatown-with-wonderful-canopy-lanterns/

Your prototyped lantern looks great! So will the moon essentially have two lanterns and the inside one rotates?
