Concept Proposals

I recently visited the Chesterwood outdoor contemporary sculpture garden in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and was able to see “One Impulse from a Vernal Wood,” Sculpture by Rick and Laura Brown. These sculptures aim to convey a sense of connected-ness in nature, similar to the idea of a forest super-organism like in Jame Cameron’s Avatar.

From these sculptures, I was inspired to create something that also tries to invoke a sense of connection in nature

Concept 1: Live, Light, Tree

This concept would involve some form of tree sculpture (maybe out of foil, wood, metal) with EL wire intertwined and connected to create a network of colored veins on the tree. Potentially having different lighting effects to convey breathing or maybe different colors for different seasons (light up green, the tree looks like its in the summer, red and yellow for fall, etc)

Concept 1: Light Forest

This concept would involve the use of hot glue sticks as a light defusing material. The glue sticks would be packed in a tightly packed grid with LEDs at the base and top. The goal would be to recreate the effect of light traveling through a web of trees

A rough graphic of the glue sticks placed in the base on top pieces containing the LEDs
My design would feature base LEDs as well as top LEDs to allow for color gradients

Artist Question: I’m trying to choose between both concepts, which one do you think is the most interesting?

I really like your first concept of creating a light tree. One of my favorite parts about living here are the changing seasons so I think having it light up for the different seasons would be so cool. I also think making the sculpture out of foil is a great idea.

I think if you made a light tree it would be a really pretty and interesting to look at final project.

Personally, I think both ideas are really great, but I think the light tree could be super cool! I even think you could combine the concepts a bit and get a really interesting result. Can’t wait to see more!

I think your El wire tree would be a very cool idea to both show connection between nature. Maybe even you could show the seasons passing between trees, or something like that. Either way I think the light up trees is a great idea!

Personally I really like your El wire tree project idea, especially if you are able to implement the ability to change the seasons on the tree, recreating nature through light art is always really interesting.

I like your theme of nature! The light tree would definitely be cool. It would be interesting to have different EL wire colors winding up the tree or if the light could “run”/”course” through the tree.

I like the light tree and I think being able to shift through seasons makes it much more interactive.
