Introduction and Art Portfolio

Hi! My name is Amahya (pronounced AH-maya) and I’m from Long Island, New York. I love to draw as a way to relax my mind. I usually have way too many thoughts going on in a single moment but drawing forces me to think only of the task at hand without any opportunity to let my mind wander. I never really had any plans for my art. It’s always just been a hobby to help me relax and occasionally help me create gifts for my friends and family.

I have some experience in traditional and digital art. When I’m on vacation, I like to do pencil sketches pertaining to the place I’m visiting. For example, when I went to Costa Rica earlier in the year, I did a bunch of sketches of some of the animals I’d seen.

I also just like sketching animals in general.

I have some experience in digital art. I recently got into the medium when I bought my iPad. One of my first digital drawings was a quick sketch of a scene from King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

I also digitally sketched the design for my best friend’s first tattoo.

Note, I did not actually tattoo her, that was left to the professionals. On the left is my design, on the right is her tattoo. I’ve actually designed or had a part in creating three of her four tattoos. That woman has far too much trust in me, bless her heart.

I also have some experience in creating physical artworks. For a class project, I created a lotus flower using bamboo sticks and tissue paper.

I also enjoy playing music. I love to play the piano and guitar. Playing has always been very cathartic for me because to play music you have to get out of your head and focus only on what you’re playing. It’s therapeutic in the same way drawing has been. I also enjoy belting out songs in the car or in my room. It really helps me to get my emotions out when I start to feel overwhelmed with school or life in general.

Outside of art, I have some coding experience as well. I’ve taken multiple computer science classes at WPI and have coded on Raspberry Pi’s and Arduino boards in my spare time. I am able to code in the C/C++ languages, Python, Java, Linux, and Arduino. I am an Electrical and Computer Engineering major so I think this light art project will be the perfect conglomeration of my chosen major and my artistic passion.

Impressive. Your drawings are very detailed and impressive. It’s also pretty fun that your friend let you draw 3 out of her 4 tattoos.

Detailed, all of your animal sketches are very well done, in particular like the frog sketch as thats my favorite animal and I generally don’t see it get that much attention in artworks.

Striking! I think it’s super cool that you designed the tattoo on your friend. I would definitely love for my friend to design a piece for me and I have actually been planning for my friend to stick and poke me sometime soon!

    Familiar.
The pencil sketching of animals is so comforting and familiar to me. I also like to draw art like this, I find it so soothing and fun. My favorite artwork of yours that you’ve shown, though, is the bamboo-paper geometric flower. It looks delicate, soft, and yet, hard-edged and defined. I feel like sheer paper art like this might lend itself really well to light art.
