Janne Parviainen

Janne Parviainen is a Finnish born artist most well known for his light paintings and light art installations. Some of his more well-known pieces have been featured in National Geographic, and a variety of other pieces have been published in magazines and online. In his work, Janne combines his love of light art with his skills in painting, sketching, and 3-Dimensional Design.

You Gave Away My Everything

He focuses primarily on light painting and specializes in what he calls, “Light Topography”, and “Light Figures”. “You Gave Away my Everything” is a piece that exemplifies his development of topography within a space. He creates these works with small handheld LEDs, tracing the aspects of a room, person, and space to create a topographical map.

Janne is in the class of Light artists that do not believe in editing post-production. So, all of his photos are taken directly from the camera, after being taken with an incredibly long exposure. Using multicolored LEDs and a technique where he “catches” the light between strokes, Parviainen is able to create the effect seen in each of these topographical spaces. He will use spaces that have previously been established, like the woods, someone’s home, a street corner, or create his desired effect through manipulation of a small studio where he does non-installation work.

Ophelia

By combining his love of light artistry as well as drawing and painting, Janne imitates famous works of art such as Ophelia, by John Everett Millais. He will use a preliminary sketch, turning that into a perspective piece within his studio, which he then traces over with light, in the same style as he completes his Light Topography, often using himself as a subject for tracing and figure manipulation.
