Light Exploration Lab

on

Ever since I was little, I’ve always been fascinated by how rain on the ground reflects light. Especially when very wet roads at night reflect car headlights and stop lights. When I saw it was raining today I was hoping I could capture a scene on the road, but unfortunately, there was very little rain left on the road by the time it was night. I discovered this after going on a hunt to find a puddle or road I could get a nice photo of reflection on. However, there are some flat metal? tables in front of the building I live in which still had a lot of water left on them. Here’s a picture I captured from the table:

And here’s a very quick (and haphazard) colored pencil sketch of it!

Even though there are many flaws with the sketch above, I found making it led me to realize a lot about how this type of reflection works. The farther from the top of the reflection you get, the less detail, especially in places that are not a light source. Additionally, I really found how the camera picked up the light from the light pole differently to be interesting. The astigmatism-like depiction of the real thing versus the aura-like depictions of the reflection (which is closes to how most people see it).
