Maquette

Mock-up:

For my project I’ve decided to go forward with my original idea of the studio set up and using glass objects.

Maquette:

For my physical model I spent some time in SL115 in the dark with some friends playing around with a mock set up.

At first I was just testing my original plan but wasn’t happy with the lack of sharp detail in the projected figure.

Then I noticed that the whiteboard across the room was reflecting what I was doing and so I decided that I wanted to be a subject in the work as well changing aspects of the original set-up

The last thing I tried was to add some dynamic aspect to the work by placing this dripping thing I have into the vase in the hopes that it would project the colors. Unfortunately the color was not projected at a large scale which I was hoping and they were kind of dull.

Unfortunately, I have no captured evidence of it but as I was cleaning up I was taking the light down and as I moved it the way the shadow change left my friends and I in silence and in unison went “wow” at how it moved. This really is making me rethink how I want to approach my project and once I have a more clear vision I will be doing more physical tests.

I love the idea of the walk-through exhibit. I think that just like how you have different glass objects you could have different light sources at different stations in the exhibit. You can sort of play around with the different combinations of shapes and light sources.
Also, if you want to add some color in the vases, I have some extra cellophane sheets that might work. I don’t know if it will be much different than the colored vase you present in class, but it could be another interesting thing to play around with.

I like how you blended your two ideas of projecting through glass and making an art installation on campus. Your demonstration today in class was very cool and I look forward to seeing what a finished product would look like.

A possible idea could be to pivot to focusing more on the abstract shapes that come out of the somewhat shoddy shadows? In 3D modeling it’s called “caustics”, it’s just about how light is photographed after having something happen to it (in your case, shining through the glass), and maybe just focus on what weird shapes you can make? Just an idea 🙂

I love your new idea a lot. I wonder if you could find maybe a small vase to put inside a bigger one and if that would also produce a fun effect. That or just stacking multiple using the same light source. I know this will just be a lot of trial and error so have fun!
