Failure, Recalibration, and Iteration

on

At first I didn’t think I had a lot of failure this week since it wasn’t in a three-dimensional space. However after thinking about it this week came with a lot of failure.

I decided to do a test block of a different flower pattern that I found online in the size of yarn I initially planned on using. I spent a couple hours making this sample, stopping because I realized I had an extra stitch. I went to change it in the pattern I was using which was simple enough, when I noticed that the shape of my stitches wasn’t actually square so it was elongating the image. So I did some math and measuring and put in the sizes of the actual stitches to get what my crochet was actually going to look like.

This was unfortunate because it meant that with such specific measurement to look good I would have to create all the flowers myself in the rectangular pixel art. So I calculated out how big I wanted the panel to end up and created a pixel grid of that size to create the images I was going to crochet. This was also important because obviously I can’t crochet anything without a design in mind.

Thus begins the iterations and failure; which I only started noticing and recording as failure a little bit into the process.

Things did get a little better when I recalled the word for Silhouette. Since then I could look at the shape I actually was trying to draw, without trying to convert it.

There were a lot of iterations to get to things that I actually liked. Here is all the iterations of Roses that I did, which I’m not sure I will use any of.

Here are Versions 1-5; though there were plenty in the middle of all of them.

After hours of simply designing flowers with the correct dimensions, I came up with only three designs that I liked. I ran each of them by my mom who is knowledgeable about flowers to see if she could guess what they were. These still might change, but I am comfortable with them at this moment.

Lily of the Valley (Spring)
HollyBerry (Winter)

So this week there was a lot of error that had to happen to continue. Though I definetly expect there to be plenty more when I start to physically build the project as well.

So if there is any idea for fall flowers or foliage please let me know.
