Failure, Recalibration & Iteration

I suppose my biggest obstacle this week was that I was unable to make a lot of progress.

The box is now finished:

But this part really was not that difficult after I had previously constructed the mockup box. The only thing left to do is to hang the light on the back. However, I realized I do not have anything to hang it with. I thought I had wall-hanging stuff in my room, but it turns out I don’t! If anyone has a spare nail or hook lying around, please let me know.

Other than this, I have not gotten a lot of work done unfortunately. The only thing I have left to work on is the slides, but I want to wait to work on that until I took the laser cutting training (which is today, Wednesday). I hope to get it cut on Friday and Monday and then spend the last couple weeks getting the colored glass effect. I’m praying nothing goes wrong with the cutting so that I can really focus on this part.

As for the colored glass effect, I experimented a bit with methodology this past week. First, I tried markers on some plastic film I had lying around. It does produce some color, but it is rather faint, so I do not really like how it looks. I might try again once I have the actual slides, but I also got some stained-glass paint to try out.

That is pretty much it, sorry for the uninteresting update. Please let me know if you have any thoughts/advice!

Update!

I got in to laser cut 🙂

I am going to clean up the scorch marks as you guys suggested and probably seal/stain it. I will show you next week.

Although I didn’t have a lot of “failure” this week, I have A LOT to experiment with over the next week so I think next week will be my F.R.C. week actually. But we will see.

Your initial cuts came out awesome, I’m super happy the laser cutter worked out! I will caution that as you cut out the rest of your parts to keep the “kerf” in mind. This just refers to the width of the laser beam and to keep it in mind as you make your next set of cuts for everything fits together well when you put your final pieces together.

I love your progress! Definitely recommend staining the panels the same color as the box. For me, Sharpies work really well with coloring plastic, so you can alwasy try that if you don’t love the paint!
