Katie’s Autobiography

Hi! I’m Katie, I’m a sophomore computer science major and psychological science minor. I’m from San Diego, California, and moving to college was the first time I’d ever moved! Because my major can be very logic-based, art in my life tends to come into play with my hobbies.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved crafts and trying out different forms of art. I’ve tried drawing, painting, sculpting, photography, film, knitting, crocheting, sewing, laser cutting, digital art, 3d modeling, animation, nail art, jewelry making, creative makeup, bedazzling, and decorative baking. Even within those categories different types of mediums. I will say I have significantly more experience with traditional/hands-on art than digital. I love trying new things and admittedly tend to hop between hobbies and not stay with one for a long period of time(though I often come back). No matter what it is though, I find both stress relief and reward in creating. And many of my favorite gifts I’ve given were handmade.

Here are some examples of art I’ve made in the past year or two!

And here’s a short video of my final project from my kinetic art class(sorry it’s so dark):

As you might be able to tell, nature tends to be a huge inspiration for me when it comes to art. There’s something so breathtaking and organic about the beauty found in nature I can’t help but pull from it myself. Florals especially tend to draw me because they’re so recognizable and have so many different meanings you can take from them. I think I tend to go to nature when I want to destress and often I go to art to destress as well, so I naturally associate them.

I hope you can see I like trying new things and different mediums so I’m super excited to dive into different types of light art and explore that! I know I’ll learn a lot from the experience and hopefully take away some new skills to build upon in the future. Additionally, I’m excited to get to know everyone and hope we can all learn from each other!
