Roman’s Concept Proposal

I Kalimba Audio Reactive Light Display

The inspiration behind this concept come from the idea of me wanting to learn how to play a new instrument. The overall goal of this project would be to create a visual display using various tools to represent the sounds played from the Kalimba. Similarly, a personal goal is to learn at least one new song on the kalimba.

Input: Playing notes/tines

Mini LED Matrix Audio Visualizer

Output: The activation of specific light patterns

II Skateboarding Light Art Video Part

What is a “Video Part”?

In Skateboarding, a “video part” is a collection of a skaters best tricks or moments while skateboarding. The form of these videos are typically 3-5 minutes long and filmed at different locations; with the end of the video featuring a finale trick. My project would essentially be a video of myself presenting tricks with the visual aid of LEDs or EL wires.

Where does light art come into this?

EL wires or neopixel LEDs can be attached all throughout the board to enhance the visuals of the performed tricks.

The “Firewalker 2.0” sneakers is a good example of how these light art tools can also be placed on shoes for the purpose of making tricks appear more stylish.

III Light Art Sculpture

With Inspiration from light artist Paul Friedlander, my third concept proposal is a light art sculpture of any kind. This concept ranges from the projection of words or images onto walls that form a larger piece or using laser pointers and light reflections to create light geometry in an open field.

Artist Question

Which of these three concepts would you look forward to seeing the most?

The concept I am most interested in is the video part with some long exposure photography added. I also like the idea of the skateboard or maybe lights placed in the environment reacting to when you land or approach them.

  2. John says:

I am looking forward to seeing the skateboard the most, if you incorporate some form of feedback into the LEDs to really make the tricks pop-out. I would be worried about the impact force when landing and if that could potentially throw off the LED’s or battery you are using.

Hi Roman, I think the kalimba idea is really neat! It would be cool to see if you could modify a kalimba and make it all in one so that there’s LEDs on the kalimba itself and then when you play, it lights up.

Hi Roman! I think all of your ideas are really great, but I feel like there is a lot of room for you to share your personal artistic style with the Kalimba project! For example, maybe instead of using the harsh LED configurations, you could design and image using specific pixels, and as you play the song, the image gets clearer and clearer or more components show up!
