I know from class, we had mentioned the machine that is used to swat flies away from fruits, but you could potentially look into using a solenoid, if you wanted to achieve a 2-dimensional look. Instead of moving in a 3D environment, the solenoid would just push the top of the string back and forth, while also having the other end at a fixed point. You would probably have to calculate the speed needed to create the amount of helix-shaped parts (Nodes/Antinodes) you would want, but it could help with the 2D look you wanted to replicate.
I really think there is a lot of potential in this form of media because of the constant presence of predictable change in itself
The light-shutter idea was one good direction
