Elena Rivka Bachman

I grew up in Northern Virginia, right outside the DC beltway. Much of my childhood was spent running around in the Virginia woods, and running around in the Oregon desert visiting my extended family. My creative inspiration is primarily drawn from nature, and I like to incorporate organic forms and themes in my work. I have been scribbling on paper for as long as I can remember, and I got into oil and acrylic painting around middle school. While I got started painting landscapes, I have also painted a series of more conceptual pieces featuring both metallic paints and extremely matte, light absorbing black paint. While my college workload takes up a significant amount of my time, I have done my best to arrange my schedule to allow time to make art. I filled most of my art requirements by completing independent study projects, which enabled me to get credit for my projects. For these projects, I used my knowledge of manufacturing and materials science to achieve artistic results. I have been working in machine shops since I was seventeen, and knowing my way around the CNC (Computer Numeric Controlled) machine tools has proven useful for making jigs and cutting precise parts for my projects. I have a minor in Robotics Engineering, which gave me experience with basic embedded programming and sensors.

One of my recent independent study projects was an exploration of ceramic glazes. I wanted to revisit pottery, and so I tried to make mugs that were identical in shape with experimental decorations. I also took a kinetic art class in the fall, which allowed me to apply my robotics and manufacturing skills to making art that moved. While I currently fit art into my life wherever convenient, working on smaller projects when I have time, I would love to help make a large installation some day. More of my art can be found on my portfolio (mixed with engineering projects), and my inktober drawings are saved on my instagram.

    Badge ~ “Clever”
I thought it was a good choice to take the picture of the rotating pinwheels so that shadow can display the abstract geometry.

Hi Elena, I’d like to give you the clever badge because of your kinetic art pieces, specifically I think its clever that the rotating pinwheels create a pattern behind it with its shadow.
