What: Basically an empty shadow box when its off. When on, a colorful image(s) appear in the center. I was partially inspired by the work by Steven Knapp.
How: On the inside of each side of the box will be a tilted board with cut outs covered by acrylic. these will be backlit by neon-like strip lights like the NeoPixel lights shown below. A different cutout on each side will allow me to project different images over each other. These cutouts will ideally be adjusted so when they project onto the center of the box they don’t appear distorted.
Up in the air:
- Option 1: color the acrylic directly and have an image with static color
- Option 2: use the strip lights to provide color, allowing for shifting colors/ a changing image
It would be cool if you made the cutout shape panels such that they could be replaced to create new images.
I’m not entirely sure how the mechanism would work from your drawing, but one worry I would have is if the drawing being too close to the LED would cause the projected image to be blurry. I think the idea is cool.
Hi Erica, I really like this idea! I think having the LED lights change colors could be interesting so that its a moving/changing image.
Hi Erica, this is a cute idea!! I think how you see the lighting (adjustable or not) would be dependent on what you are keeping as the subject of the piece! For example, if you think you would receive more stories from having the color change, it would be cool to use LED strips and then just change the colors. But if you are keeping a static image where the colors don’t change, it would be cool to play around with dimensions and distance, for example, keep background things in the farthest acrylic sheet and seeing how they show on the top most layer!
