Final Documentation – Olivia P

Title: Space is Lit – A Light Art Installation

For my light art project, Space is Lit – A Light Art Installation, I was able to marry my interests in electrical engineering, art, and space. I transformed a classroom into a glowing solar system comprised of seven planets and twenty stars, creating an immersive space experience. From certain angles of the piece, the constellations of the big dipper and the zodiac cancer can be seen.

From this angle of the installation, the big dipper can be seen just left of the center and the cancer constellation is to the right.
This video shows what it was like to walk around the project.

I used 6 inch clear sphere bases with electroluminescent wire for the planets which allowed me to customize the design for each one and let the light shined through it to glow. I used warm white LEDs with white tissue paper as a diffuser for the stars.

This project was able to marry my interests in art, electrical engineering, and space. Over the past term I’ve researched light artists such as Leo Villareal as well as different techniques and materials for creating this project. Through class discussion and at-home experimentation, the project evolved and came together to be even more than I had hoped. Although this was a temporary installation, the above documentation will preserve the exhibit so that it can continue to be viewed in the future.
