Many of her works use common objects and &#8220;hacking&#8221; otherwise inaccessible technology. She calls this &#8220;improvisational engineering&#8221;. One great example of this is her project <a href=\"http:\/\/www.misc.name\/coastermelt\/\">Coastermelt<\/a>, which follows her process of reverse engineering a Blu-ray player in order to manipulate the data on it to create images.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-176 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joshuarosenstock.com\/teaching\/lightart-c17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/01\/Picture2-600x451.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.joshuarosenstock.com\/teaching\/lightart-c17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/01\/Picture2-600x451.png 600w, https:\/\/www.joshuarosenstock.com\/teaching\/lightart-c17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/01\/Picture2.png 648w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.misc.name\/coastermelt\/\">Forest<\/a>&#8221; is a piece she worked on in 2015 in collaboration with the Toronto International Film Festival&#8217;s Kids digiPlaySpace. It consists of a large wall with holes and handles all lit from behind by constantly-changing lights.\u00a0The idea behind the piece is that kids could play with the handles, modifying the light in interesting, natural motions in order to encourage play, curiosity, and collaboration.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-177 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joshuarosenstock.com\/teaching\/lightart-c17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/01\/Picture3-600x450.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.joshuarosenstock.com\/teaching\/lightart-c17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/01\/Picture3-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.joshuarosenstock.com\/teaching\/lightart-c17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/01\/Picture3.jpg 749w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Scott\u00a0was also a key part in the creation of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.misc.name\/fadecandy\/\">FadeCandy<\/a>, an interface for easily controlling LEDs for light art. The project arose out of her\u00a0own experience using LEDs for art. She developed the microcontroller as a way to make LED art more accessible to people. It is now sold by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adafruit.com\/product\/1689\">Adafruit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/53716979e4b0bb13e3c93132\/537464c2e4b09a4c09220f3e\/53734c24e4b0cc8670974da2\/1432271130050\/terrible-city.png?format=1000w\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another major\u00a0accomplishment of hers was two related works: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.misc.name\/zen-photon-garden\/\">Zen Photon Garden<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.misc.name\/high-quality-zen\/\">High Quality Zen<\/a>&#8220;. Both are software simulations of light using a technique called raytracing.
